That's a very cool pic. The silouette of the Jedi Starfighter looks very Sith Infiltrator-esque.

What was different about the IMAX shot?

The IMAX shot was part of movie about special effects. It featured the first footage shown from the SE. In addition to this, they also featured a "revamped" version of the beginning of ANH. The flyovers leading into the next shot of the Runner coming at the camera were all that was shown.

This segment was shot with IMAX cameras and "touched-up" models that had more details added to them than the originals. If I remember correctly, everything was done optically instead of digitally. It was one of the last few things run through the optical process at ILM.

My impressions of the sequence was that it was very clean and detailed. I don't know if it would translate well into the following shots in the sequence. Although it looked really cool, I do remember it being different in appearance from the rest of the movie.

If Chinbeard were to go these extremes, I'd rather him use new models or CGI for all the shots to be consistent.

The IMAX ANH opening shot looks crap. It's online somewhere, and it looks like something you'd see on Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda instead of Star Wars.

if u can find the clip please post the link!(be nice to see it again) i saw it on imax when it was released and it was amazing back then on the HUGE screen they also reshot the falcon going to hyperspace which also made your draw drop, iirc the opening had added shockwaves to the explosions probably looks crap now but back then it was truly amazing! they wont be able to use it for the dvds(unless it is cropped of) as it was specially composed for the imax format which isnt widescreen

Click on the pic. It's not the best format but it's available to stream hi-speed and 56k.

nice one mr.b!
on the imax screen and sound system it really was "a moment" the clarity and detail (even of the individual stars) was so fine it brings back the memories, though i doubt they will wheel it out again as the technology described through the show is so out of date now! and to release it on dvd would probably cost too much cause of all the clips and royalties etc! POLITICS! ;)

could this opening battle be the last "outer space" battle we see on the big screen? as i doubt any movie that will follow (or has come before it) will be able to beat the scope and magnittude! in the same sort of way i doubt there will be any bigger fantasy battles bigger than the ones we saw in LOTR
btw can anyone think of any movies that beat SW in the space battles category? (not including jedi!)

I saw this Imax movie. It had them making the Star Destroyer and recreating the shot. If I remember correctly the model of the Star Destroyer was a bit different looking then the real one. It was cool to see it, but if I remember correctly it didn't seem to impress me too much when I saw it for a second time after the Special Edition came out.
