I never liked the character of Obi-Wan until the PT. He was always just some rambling old guy to me. So I prefer Ewan.

gotta go with Alec even tho he hated star wars and the fans :(

That's overstating it a bit. His problem was with the fans. If he didn't like the movies he wouldn't have been in all 3.

I like Ewan, but I'd have to go with Alec's Obi-Wan.

AOTC Obi-Wan was a fucking nag.

Well Obi-Wan(McGregor)is mutch younger in Prequels than he is in OT so of course he could and did that. :heavymetal:

I like em both the same but for different reasons. Obi-Wan de la ANH was an old man who was finishing his life by helpin lil Luke, remembering the good days when he was a youthful badass. Obi-Wan of the PT is that youthful badass. Plus he's in the PT more than he is in the OT.

I was just lurking through the boards here and this cracked me up. Here I'd completely and utterly forgotten about your existence, and yet you're dwelling on some warped, embittered view you have of me. Wow. That's just about the saddest thing I've heard.

To answer the question in the thread topic, I don't really have a preferrence. They are the same character in my mind. I was always a fan of Old Ben as a kid so I've been an Alec fan longer, but of course Ewan's done a brilliant job expanding the role. And here's to hoping that continues in RotS and that Ewan took notes on Alec's performance in Bridge on the River Kwai because his character is so my image of "General Kenobi" in that.

Well, I think it's rather hard to choose which Obi-Wan is "better" since they each play a different role in the story...in the prequels, Obi-Wan is more of a warrior and and later on a teacher, and bad ass with a lightsaber...in the OT he's more of a mentor and a voice of reason...therefore, each actor does superbly in their respective roles...it leads more towards the question, which role did you think Obi-Wan exceeded at, the warrior teacher or the reasoning mentor? I will say, however, that it has been fun seeing Obi-Wan kicking some ass in the PT and then watching the old man in the OT knowing what he was like when he was younger. Great fun...

Keep it up. You're getting cooler by the minute.

I definitely like that Obi-Wan has a much bigger role in the PT. I was always bummed about Alec getting offed so quickly in the OT because he was great.

Basically, Alec was an amazing actor and there's almost no one who could have followed in those footsteps. Casting Ewan is the most brilliant thing GL has done in years.

I never really liked Obi-Wan in the OT, but after I saw TPM, Obi-Wan became my favorite character. Now when I watch the OT, I love Alec's performace and the way he acts in certain scenes ("That's no moon, it's a space station." He looks suprised to see it, like he knew it existed but had never seen it.) I also agree that getting Ewan to be Obi-Wan was a smart move.

I think the injuries can just be chalked up to danger in dealing with the lightsaber as such an unstoppable weapon. Story wise Dooku had to somehow incapacitate Ob-Wan without doing him major injury. Now seeing that the lightsaber has the ability to slice through a human body like a knife through runny cheese, there wasn't a whole lot left. We had already seen him take out Ani with the lightening, and more than likely Lucas didn't want him to use the Force to lob heavy objects at Obi like Vader did Luke, so what else was there? Maul beat the crap out of Obi in TPM, so just knocking him around wasn't good enough. so they may have just said, "Let him slice him up just a little and the pain of it will be enough to knock him out of commision for the few minutes we need him down." Seems reasonable enough. My only logic fault with it is why Dooku didn't just off him instead of trying to be all cute and menacing looking? As with many screen villains, his propencity for grandstanding got in the way.

Ewan has made the role of Obi-Wan his. Guinness laid the foundation, and fantastically, but Ewan really brought the character to life. I know the script (and Guinness' apparent dislike for the series) has alot to do with Ben's lack of character development in the OT, but to me, Ewan MacGregor IS Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Alec Guinness just happened to resemble a much older Ewan.

i was originally going to answer with alec guiness because of his stellar acting and a certain relaxed ruthlessness he brought to the role. but then i rememred the dooku anakin fight scene in TPM and it reminded me of how hap[py I am that Ewan and Christian practice the swordfighting so much and in fact it seems that Ewan has real talent for it.

The effort they put in to actually allow us to see basically near HK film speed swordfighting without body doubles or trick photog or CGI is amazing. I have to give teh edge to Ewan because of how hard he has worked on the physical aspects fo the role and Alec for the non-physical (i guess acting is physical too but you know what i mean) aspects of teh role..

together they make Obi Wan a great character. trade either one of them at the other age and it wouldnt work as well (although Ewan might turn out to be a fine older male actor.. but i dont think he will be as classy as alec at his age in OT)
