OT DVD Colo(u)r(s) List

I've noticed quite a few shots that looked very dull (colourwise) in the DVD release than the SE release.
A few instantly come to mind since they're key moments that I remember, but if you notice anymore, list them.
Throughout the three films, I've noticed several explosions are lacking colours and look almost black and white, meanwhile many explosions are too rich with colour.

ANH
- Death Star Exploding looks almost black and white, including the ring, except for a bit of blue rain on the right edge of the explosion - meanwhile Alderaan is a BEAUTIFUL explosion of orange and red which looks much better, and the ROTJ DSII Explosion is normal colour.

ESB
- Snowspeeders shooting up the downed AT-AT, the fireball isn't as fiery as it was before, looks washed out, one of my favourite shots.
- Several shots of the Falcon in the asteroid field look very brown.
- The shot of the Falcon flying into the Space Slug tunnel used to have a bit of blue on the walls, but now the shot looks like it was greyscaled and had brown shaded over it.

ROTJ
- Wedge and Lando's attack on the reactor, the room is a nice shade of blue, then when Wedge attacks the power generator, the scene looks almost B/W, same goes for the shot of the Falcon bursting the generator itself and the shot of the reactor collapsing. The gigantic explosion doesn't look as fiery as it used to...

Lowry did a brilliant job for everything else though.

The final scene of Empire looks washed out too. The close-up shot of the Falcon flying across the backdrop galaxy is in black and white, no color at all, and as the fleet turns and flys away with Luke, Leia, and the droids looking out the window of the med-center, the color is just barely, barely there. The other ships exhaust look pretty dull too.

I noticed another minor near B&W shot. In ESB, the first shot seen of Vader looking out the viewport of the Executor, all the red and white lights on the ceiling and along the panels under the windows are completly greyed out. Yet in the following Vader shot after Piett informs Ozzel of the Probe Droid's findings the lights are colored.

the major problem is that lowrys computers do an overall scene scan and it automatically adjusts the colours for the overall scene, i now know that this is why the sabers are screwed from time to time, the same is for the other scenes, the computers just generalise and someone checks i too make sure there faces arent green etc. if it passes for normalities it passes! sabers and explosions are inconsequential though the final falcon vs. tie explosion still looks like the best one in the OT! and that has actually had green tinges added via the lowry process! we cant win on this one! unless they hire me and il re do it all for them for the next set

it really needed someone to go through each frame and colour corect each element, but they would probably be still working on it if that was the case! the scene u posted above is agood example, the colours and the detail of the core now look amazing but the scenes tone+colours+detail were only adjusted for the core + background, once the explosion kicks in the colours in it are now out of whack! we win some we lose most of them it seems!

I prefer the Laser Disc SE colours though, I seem to remember the room being bluish though, perhaps too much Rogue Leader :P

The Alderaan explosion looks awesome now because the colours are saturated

Yeah, but I'm sure there's a way to use the colour data from the laser discs.

If what I've read on this site in other areas is accurate, there would be no color data to get from a laserdisc as the video is actually an analog track. They would either have to hand key the adjustments using either reference material from somewhere or just by eyeballing it. After reading PJVaders explanation of how the Lowry system works, many of the issues now make perfect sense. They are still problamatic, but at least there is a reason attributed to it. In order to correct those things, a list of changes would need to be generated, the ares isolated, and then color corrected or, in such cases as lightsaber problems, painted in. Since there is no way this is the last release of these movies, we'll probably see all these issues corrected when the "Archive" editions are released and Lucasfilm can throw more resources into making the set.

I would love to see that side by side with the old versions.

OK, follow the links above and check out all the comparison shots. Now, notice how many times they guy has an extra shot at the bottom, saying "I created this by just adjusting the contrast and brightness".

Umm, that's what you are supposed to do to your television, too. There's a special area to use to adjust your TV screen, and it actually does help. Alot of the problems seem to dissapear when you calibrate your television using the DVD's.

If you adjusted your brightness and contrast levels so things like the Lightsaber Cross in ROTJ look normal, all the day scenes are going to look nearly white.

While I agree with the majority of the complaints regarding the visuals, I have no problem with the Death Star explosion.

Don’t forget, Alderaan is a planet. The Death Star is a piece of manmade technology.

I want the explosions to look different.

One is life being destroyed. The other is mechanical contrivance.

The blue halo effect around it after it explodes is a nice touch.

Also, it looks like intentional effort was put into this. I wouldn’t automatically expect it to change in the future.

The blue rain is just the bluscreen IMO

It COULD be intentional, but one can never be too sure.

I like how with the DSII's explosion, several of the huge fiery bits of debris now have a rose tint to them, it looks awesome.
