Original Sound Track Re-Release(s)

Postby demomanTNA » September 10th 2004 12:23 am

I just thought I would pass this but also on September 21st we'll see all three soundtracks for the OT re-released. I'm assuming at this point of time its just the 1997 SE versions with possibly a new remaster done. Any word on any changes or new stuff or even remastering?

You've got to hand it to Lucas... he's a master of repackaging and retreading. I already bought the Special Edition versions of the soundtracks and I just caught myself considering this new set. I'll stick to the DVDs.

You hit the nail on the head there, bud. The "collectors" will lap this shit up but I already used over 600MB of bandwidth downloading the SE soundtracks off Suprnova. Lucas Marketing can kiss my ass if they think they're getting anymore money out of me (DVDs with standing of course), let alone bandwidth.

I know people in marketing, and they have a good laugh at us Star Wars folk because of these morons who'll buy anything with the Star Wars stamp on it. I'm sure Lucas himself is the one pushing for it but as these marketing people put it - "It's an aggressive strategy against a weak minded and easily controlled consumer. The perfect market to operate in. I wish we had such an easy job.”

I'll buy the CD set because I don't own any Star Wars soundtracks outside of AOTC.

Here's the description from Starwarsshop.com
The heart of this collection is the original musical soundtrack, composed and conducted by John Williams and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. The recordings have been newly remastered using Sony Music's DSD (Direct Stream Digital) multichannel surround sound.

In addition, each movie's two-disc set comes complete with new exclusives. The packaging features dramatic 3-D lenticular images, as well as some never-before-seen images from each of the films. Each soundtrack comes with a movie poster foldout, created especially for these releases. The discs come loaded with screen savers featuring images previously available only in Japan -- rare book covers of The New Jedi Order and Clone Wars book series, long prized by collectors and fans.

Strange they talk about it being "remastered using Sony Music's DSD (Direct Stream Digital) multichannel surround sound" yet I don't see ANY indication of these discs being SACD/CD hybrid discs (SACD uses DSD for its encoding). Unless of course they are doing what they did on The Rolling Stones remasters and not mention its a SACD/CD hybrid.

Oh.. for those who don't know what SACD is...

That will explain what you need to know.

Wait, they're only one disc each? Fuck that, why go from the complete scores on the SE soundtracks to some shortened truncated bullshit?

Tell me about it!

I received them from Amazon last Monday - they are from exactly the same digital masters used for the 1997 SE's. They've just gone through the DSD process to get onto the disc, which has made about 1% difference in the sound quality, and I've got some pretty good Hi-Fi gear! Advertising them as multi-channel is complete bollocks as well!

Heck even the track timings are EXACTLY the same as the 1997 release.

Needless to say I sent mine back to Amazon for a refund on the grounds that they are not multi-channel - false advertising!

To be honest, the sound isn't great on these discs or the 1997 SE releases. Lucas even has the nerve to list himself as producer on the Star Wars disc!!!! I still think the 1993 anthology boxed set sounds the best in terms of how it's mixed, even though there's tape hiss and the odd drop out etc.

Cheers!

That pissed me off as well. I only bought the New Hope set then put it in my SACD player. Needless to say there was a LOT of four letter words being screamed when the disc came up as a standard CD. I think a letter is in order to Sony Music on this. It is indeed FALSE ADVERTISING.
