Wrong they are replaceble, but not by you. I have an iPod they are the best shit ever. Use it everyday . When I go out I'm more likely to bring it then my wallet. Get the 20GB model, it will last you longer then the 15Gb.

Why the frig does anyone need 20Gb of music on them at any given time?

I was just supplying a link. To replace an ipod battery costs $250 plus shipping charges. Doesn't seem worth it to me.

Personally, i'm not a big fan of music. I've never even owned a walkman.

So that I never have to say - "Damn! I should have loaded that song on here before I left the house!"

You can also use them as a portable HDD. So I could traffic things between work & home, etc.

yeah but you don't need to load the thing with 20gb of music files. You can store all sorts of media on there.

I'm eventually gonna transfer all my CD's onto this thing and turn myself into a raging walking portable music machine.

Well, for perspective, I have nearly all of my music in 128kbps aac (comparable size/quality to 192kbps mp3).

I have 4240 Songs (in 364 albums), 11.4 days worth (all day, everyday, without hearing the same song twice) in 16.5gb.

Mine's gone jogging, cycling and been jostled around while I'm at work or football matches, and I haven't found any problems.

So, lets start a "sound off":

- how many songs in your iTunes (or other music) library?
- about how much is legal (stuff you've paid for on CD, or legally downloaded)?

I have 5516 songs and I'd say it's about 90% legal.

EDIT: The other 10% is nearly all albums I've copied from friend's CDs.

3019 songs in library. 916 songs on iPod (50% full). 100% legal because downloading/uploading is legal in Canada. 50%-50% ripped from CD/downloaded.

i have a, wait for it, a whopping 120 songs in my 'my music' folder all 100% legal as i have the original CDs - all pretty much ambient chillout tracks.

Don't have the exact number in front of me, but I think I have about 6200 songs in my iTunes Library, equivalent to more than a month of listening time (I have quite a few audiobooks, but 95% of my files are music).
As for how much is legal...I'd say less than 2%

I'm not sure how many songs we have because half of them are split up into subfolders, but it looks like we have around 9 gigs of music on the computer at the moment, all but a small amount illegal. We've burned a lot of stuff onto normal audio CDs and deleted it, though so who knows how much music we have between what's on the computer, what we burned and the actual CDs we've bought.

looks like we have 1612 songs on our playlist, not including some full albums we've downloaded and not including a huge torrent of Tom Waits we just got.

What's the fascination with IPods? They seem like the dodgiest piece of technology out there - pokemon gone wrong.

i agree with dkr here - in the age of technology miniturization who needs to be caring around a lug of hardware like the ipod - there a smaller mp3 players that hold up to half a gig... imo thats plenty - thats actually twice the amount on my hdd.

iriver make some good looking and quality mp3 players - id get one of those if i had the extra money.

The reason why I wouldn't get a "smaller" music player is simple. Everyday I would have to unload/load music, with my iPod I just leave it there. No worring about what I have loaded.

Well, I am looking at the new Sony one and I have training on Tuesday for it.

20GB ATRAC or MP3 compression, 30hr battery life, 1/4 size of the Ipod and 25mins anti-shock with 3metre fall protection, FM tuner and In/Out recording. And it's only AUD$100 more than the IPOD...

It seems the best to me at the moment.

Sony regularly pumps the battery life of their products. My old CD player was supposed have a 32 hour battery life. I got maybe 8 hours. My Camcorder is supposed to have 16 hours, more like 4 with 2 batteries(not using the LCD).

I remember when portable CD players were spendy items and you were seen as "rich" if you bought one. Definately a status symbol (hmm, doesn't that all sounds familiar?). I bought my first Sony player in 1989, my sophmore year of High School.



It was a D-99 and I paid ~$230 for it. Compared to today's units, it was quality construction, all metal top and bottom pieces, slim, compact form factor. The only weak spot was the volume control. I probably got 7 years of hard use out of that little guy. I never dropped it, though.

I mainly use mine either when out jogging, at work so I can listen to music I want (I work in a large, open lab), and during the prep time before football matches.

I take the bus, subway and walk alot. Also at work I hook my iPod up to the boombox and listen to my music, if it gets quiet I'll watch a movie on my computer.

It'd be pretty cool if we all helped each other out in getting free stuff like this, if it still works.

The Shuffle's worth the money. I've got one, and if you can get over having no interface, or having "random" songs play, it's a great little player. Super portable, 12-hr battery that recharges through a USB port, etc. I have the 512 mg version - good for the "favorites" collection.

I thought you could load up a playlist and have it play sequentially in addition to a random auto-load?

I have 3077 songs in my iTunes. It's probably 50% stuff I purchased and 50% stuff I ripped from my friends cd collections. I also have the 20 gb iPod, but mine's nearly 2 years old. I bought the 2 yr warranty, so before my 2 years is up I'm going to call and complain that my battery is dying (which it isn't, just gone down a bit since I first got it) and have them replace it...

Apple store has them for 299. Bestbuy has them for 299. I think pretty much everywhere is going to be 299 for the 20 gb. The price has dropped since I got mine. I think it was almost $350 for mine when the 20 gb first came out...

If I get one, it'll be the 40GB. I have a tiny hard drive (we had it built by some guy, and he fucked it up horribly), so I can't have much on here. I have over 400 full CDs that I'd like to put on there.

I picked up the HP Ipod at Sams club of all places 2 weeks ago - 20gb with the charger and adapter to listen on the radio for $319. So far - 1330 tunes, 95% legal, with about 200 cd's left to rip onto it. Bought it as a treat to myself after a brutal tax season at work - love it a lot. My only complaint is that when in shuffle it tends to play certain artists more often than not. Its not truly random, I guess - anybody else have this problem?

You're not thinking of it in pure numbers sense. Each song is given a key value number in the database. The random feature simply picks a random assorment of numbers to create a playlist. Ever see two consecutive numbers show up in a lottery? Its funny how truly random numbers in reality happen consecutively at times. There's been a lot of 'net articles written about this very subject.
