Early Eighties Han Solo Book Trilogy

Postby Antiriad » January 19th 2005 11:15 am

Hi all, anyone remember these three books? Did you have a copy back in the day or still do? Where there any more? Cant remember there being any other Star Wars fiction novels (aside from film adaptions) until Timothy Zahns books in the early nineties.

There was a Lando book as well, I remember that much. I'm trying to find my old ones but they seem to be missing. Those books were good times in the third grade. :) I should read them again.

back in my primary school days there were rumors in the playground that han solos revenge was the movie to follow return of the jedi - sorta funny how sheep rumors existed before the internets public popularity.

These are all still available. They were originally published by Del Rey and I don't think they ever went out of print, though the Han and Lando trilogies are both published as a single "omnibus" book. As is the trilogy of the OT adaptations.

Cool! Lando books too. I wonder why my brother never bought them as well...

Good to hear they are still available. How did any of you rate them exactly? Been a while since I read my copies myself.

I enjoyed both series. Lando's I believe had the battle of tannab stuff that they mentioned in ROTJ

I rather enjoyed Han Solo at Stars' End. Revenge is pretty good. The Lost Legacy book is just decent. They're good reads, as good as any SW book Bantam published and better than most. The smugger-era of Han Solo's life is tragically overlooked in the greater SW universe, so I'm all for any books that shed a bit more light on that period.

Out of mild interest, and on a related topic, does anyone know if the EU has expanded on the "running into that bounty hunter" that Han mentions at the start of ESB?

The period between ANH and ESB seems to have been left to comics, with the exception of Splinter of the Mind's Eye. As for the bit you mention, I think it was covered in the issue of the Marvel title that preceded their adaptation of ESB.

Here's a snip or two from the OS:

http://www.starwars.com/databank/locati ... ell/?id=eu

Han Solo has had a history of close run-ins with bounty hunters on Ord Mantell. It was there that Solo's smuggler friend Drub McKumb warned him about the sizable bounty on his head, and the pursuing hunters on Ord Mantell. One of these, Skorr, was the one that almost tagged Han Solo prior to the Battle of Hoth. He kidnapped Princess Leia Organa and Luke Skywalker, holding them hostage at an abandoned stellar energy station on Ten Mile Plateau as bait for Solo. Solo and Chewbacca turned the tables on Skorr and rescued their friends. Another hunter, Alfreda Goot, succeeded in kidnapping Princess Leia in an effort to force Han into a race that would prove her the fastest in the galaxy.

http://www.starwars.com/databank/locati ... ll/?id=bts

If each tale of Han's exploits on Ord Mantell was taken at face value, then it's a wonder he keeps returning to the planet, so frequently do bounty hunters attack him.
Based on a single line of dialogue in The Empire Strikes Back, Ord Mantell was formally introduced to readers through the daily Star Wars newspaper strips by Archie Goodwin and Al Williamson.

In the story arc, the hunter named Skorr kidnaps Luke and Leia to lure Han into a trap. Solo gets the jump on Skorr and escapes, but several story arcs later, Skorr returns, backed up by such hunter heavyweights as Dengar, Bossk and Boba Fett for another run-in on Ord Mantell.

In a 1984 audio dramatization, author Brian Daley penned a tale of a Rebel Mission to Ord Mantell, wherein the Rebels needed to get badly needed funds out of a bank on the planet. There, Solo faces off against Cypher Bos, a Nalrithian bounty hunter.

In 1990, author Troy Denning told of another encounter in the solitaire game adventure book, Scoundrel's Luck. Though Solo and the bounty huntress Afreda Goot don't have a face-to-face confrontation on Ord Mantell, Goot does kidnap Leia from the planet, leading to a wild chase that eventually ends up on Tatooine.

Here's some info regarding the original comic:

Thanks. I went in interested and came out the other side with the opposite sentiment. Underscores why i've never really delved into the EU. That, and names like Drub McKumb.

But thanks all the same.
