Based on his conversation with Anakin regarding his old master it possible that either Palpatine or Plagueis created Anakin from midichlorians and for whatever reason Shmi was used as the vessel to carry him.
Maybe there are others like him around. I remember Lucas saying the prequels would raise additional questions for the OT.
Did Palpatine or Plagueis create Anakin?
