From an unknown source at this point in time (ie. take with grain of salt):

Padme is killed by Anakin at the end of EpIII. However, Anakin now knows how to keep a person alive thanks to the influence and the corruption of Darth Sidious. So you imagine how angry he would be when Padme is taken from him at a point where he can actually save her on the industrial planet. This brings about a huge conflict between Anakin and Obi-Wan because Obi-Wan is the one who is stopping Anakin from saving her and a lot of the banter in the fight is about Shmi and Anakin's relationship and Obi-Wan's revelations about Anakin's worthiness to me made a Jedi.

That does sound somewhat plausible, based on what we've heard, but I have a little difficulty imagining how it goes...

1) Padme shows up
2) Anakin hurts her, then
3) Anakin tries to save her with Ben getting in the way

Interesting in that Anakin tries to reverse his "sin" but is thwarted by Obi-Wan at a crucial time. That would be enough reason to piss him right off.

Cheap? From what I gathered, Anakin literally sells his soul to the devil then doesn't get a chance to use the power he sold his soul for thus leaving him in limbo.

It is a cool concept, but it takes away from his evilness. I mean, I know he gets redeemed in Jedi and was always not that bad underneath, but in ANH he's killing planets and sticking robotic needles in his daughter. Kind of a big character leap from just being upset that he can't save Padme to watching millions get killed and torturing princesses.

Well in order for Anakin to have that ability he has to take the short and easy path of the darkside. To me it reads that he becomes ruthless in getting what he wants (which is what Vader is in ANH) but fails to use it. It makes sense that once RotJ he could use the quick and easy path but decides not to.

I agree, though, it is open to interpretation.
