The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Saw it today and thought it was mediocre.

Never read the books, heard the radio stuff, or watched the BBC series. It has some cute moments, but nothing laugh out loud funny. I was disappointed considereing some of the hype I'd read about it.

I'd give it a 6/10. For a comedy, it just wasn't that funny.

I loved the scene with the "lightsaber bread knife" complete with sound effects...

The theater I was in died laughing during that moment.

Alan Rickman fucking rocked as Marvin. I thought the whole movie was cast well and I think Douglas would be very proud.

Things I liked: Marvin, Arthur, Ford, the look of the Vogons, "So Long...", the nod to the tv series with the music playing when the book itself is shown floating in space, all the little book references (Babel Fish - though in the book it's used to disprove the existence of God in the guide - everything is more detailed)... the guide itself was excellent.

Things I didn't like... cutting out humor for no apparent reason (most of the conversation between Arthur and the construction guy, Prosser, is gone - including all the parts that are funny, etc), cutting out random words here and there, humor that wasn't really all that good ("The restaurant is at the OTHER end of the universe" - I think it's cooler in the other versions where the restaurant is actually at the temporal end instead of the physical edge)... things that were unexplained for no apparent reason - Humma's eyes (nostrils?), the flyswatters (I have a hunch they were supposed to show that in Vogon society no one should think, it's all bureaucracy... but that didn't come across easily)... Somehow it managed to have a very different feel from the books and tv series (I haven't heard the radio plays yet). If they could have combined the tv series, a little more of the book's humor, and the effects and cast of the film, it would have been pretty close to perfect.

Also, the sound mix seemed off - frequently, I could barely hear what many characters were saying. Annoying.

Overall, it was ok/fair as an adaptation of the H2G2 story, getting some of elements right but unfortunately editing out a LOT of what made the books/radio plays funny. I'm gonna see it again and attempt to reduce the expectation level - only then will I be able to tell if it's really a good movie by itself.

Havent read the books, have only heard stupid reference to the books for many years, never anything actually amusing. The trailers look just so stupid and unfunny. So I've decided I'll put it on my list of overhyped movies that I'll never bother seeing, along with Titanic and Pearl Harbour.

My girlfriend saw it yesterday and thought it was pretty bad. All she got from me was a "I told you it'd be shit".

I just finished the four-piece trilogy before I went to see the movie yesterday. I wasn't expecting much, so I did enjoy it, altho I do resent the movie industry for even starting the now tired and obligatory extraneous romance sub-plot. Other than that, I was begawked and impressed.

My personal high point......one word......sofas.
