I find it ironic that Star Wars is in some way helping to promote Space Balls - a spoof on Star Wars - that's all. I guess it depends on how you looko at it (i.e. whether you choose to see it as ironic or just a coincidence depends not on fact but on perception because of the reliance on Star Wars for Space Balls' very existence).
Most importantly, I just found it to be funny. My sincerest apologies if it failed to have the same effect on others.

I don't have a "problem with irony." I have a different opinion of the definition of irony, as many do these days. It largely comes from misuse over the years, granted, but words are not written in stone - we created them, and we can change them. In pop culture, irony now often means something different than in the precision driven world of academia. Language was born of organic grunts and gestures. We've made it into an exact science. What we create, we can change, and atleast in mainstream conciousness (through the media, slang, etc.) we do. For me though, irony is coincidence, but a particular sort of coincidence; one in which both events relate to one another in an ironic (or irony-like, if you're too stubborn to grant me that) way.
(Before you quote a thesaurus, dictionary, or wikipedia.com to the contrary, please understand that I already know the technical definition of irony. I just don't adhere to it in the same way some do).
I could just as easily ask why some people have a "problem with being so anal as to take an obviously lighthearted thread containing lots of lol's and lmao's and turn it into a pointless debate over semantics." Instead, I politely explained that I simply have a different opinion. I even said sorry for not getting people to laugh, which was all this was ever meant to do. What I got back was that I have a "problem with irony."
I have noticed that ALOT of hostility exists here towards a. new people, b. people who aren't as familiar with the way things work as others, and c. those who don't share the exact interpretation of everything from words, to moral stance, to the intent behind a scene in the - usually as yet unreleased - particular movie being debated at any given time. Understand that I'm not saying in any way that anyone in this thread has been hostile, but I have seen alot that has made me feel as though I need to be on the defensive simply by virtue of being new here - which is very sad. So if I seem strangely adamant about this, that's why.
I have my opinion, and I stand by it. It's as simple as that. I only posted this for the sake of a good laugh. Again, I apologize if it didn't achieve it's objective. Actually, the reason why new people get dug into is because they don't understand the social structure and theory behind the community of said message board. Message Boards are basically a large circle of people sharing ideas and responding in turn to the ideas proposed to the group at large. If said new person interrupts the group, and fails to share and respond, they are not accepted into the group. The group feels the need to expel the offender, because they don't understand the social structure. Simple no ?

As Traiken points out so well, it's not about your opinion of the word "ironic". Sorry buddy, but my dictionary is pretty clear on the definition of irony, and nothing you said in your opening post was even slightly ironic. There's absolutely no way you can twist or interpret your opening post to form anything even remotely related to irony.
You fucked up, just accept it and move on. Next time you open your mouth about something being ironic you might think twice and hence learned your lesson here.

It's not possible to "prove" anything. Any proof, measurement, etc. is entriely dependent on perception. It has to be processed by our minds for us to perceive it. Nothing can be proven with 100% accuracy.
Dictionaries are books filled with symbols that we arbitrarily decided constituted these arbitrary creations we call words, which all have arbitrary definitions. We created them. They are not inherent. They are not intrinsic. They are creations. Look at existentialism and quantum physics and you will find that there are no definites, only possibilities.
The reason it is about respecting an opinion is because if you read this post carefuly, not once have I said that you weren't entitled to your opinion, that you had a "problem" comprehending a definition, etc. Not once have I said that of anyone.
I understand and respect the official, technical definition of the word. I am not disputing that definition at all. I agree with you all that that is the definition. It would be ironic if StarWars.com (a site created to promote Star Wars) were advertising a product that attempted to truly knock Star Wars, ie: Triumph The Insult Dog Loves Star Wars — To Poop On.
But since Space Balls is a tame spoof that appeals to many fans, it's only a good marketing move.
I hold pretty close to a word's proper definition, as it the reason for the word after all. But 'irony' has always been a bit of a trouble-spot for grammarians. I've read some horrible definition entries for irony that amount to basically 'calling something what it isn't,' or 'not what you were expecting.' By these 'official' definitions, mislabeling produce and finding a penny in your sock-drawer are ironic as Oedipus Rex.
(I do find it ironic how many visitors to this site are put onto the defensive by the equivalent of a grade-school-girl clique of fiercely dogmatic nerds. But anyway...)
