Yep! Indications have been he's a stormtrooper on the run from Imperial forces.

DisneyLucasfilm has indicated that Stormtroopers now are conscripts as indicated by the rush job known as "Rebels".

Niggatrooper and Lightclaymore seem to be issues of contention at 4chan/Reddit/SomethingAwful. The designs could have been a bit more practical - especially the (unnecessary) saber hilt. The astromech V.I.N.cent "head" could have also been made flush with the spherical body.

After all the work they've put into this, and all the work they still have to do over the next year, they went "Oops! We forgot to attach his head to his body!"
Or maybe, just maybe, it's how the little fucker works in the sci-fi/fantasy world? Or perhaps he is riding that ball thingy? :monocle:

Lucas getting top notch performances from actors? When did this happen? I'm not a lucas hater, i like the prequels, especially episode iii, but that is by far his weakness. Sorry, let me re-phrase: Lucas is not good with actors, not awful, but not the best. Sorry if I sounded misleading.

In regards to Empire, Lucas did everything but sit in the chair.

Same with Jedi.

He took the performances created by the actors and Kersh/Marquand but the visual design, tone, rhythm, composition was all Lucas from storyboards to the final mix.

Blown away and happy to see the clips.

I suppose if I had a gripe about it, it's that there is absolutely nothing to indicate or infer that this movie takes place 30 yrs after the events of ROTJ. If we didn't know that this was supposed to take place a generation later, does the technology and state of the galaxy alone convey that?

We see old school tie-fighters, stormtroopers, the Falcon, beat down x-wings, speeders... everything looks pretty much exactly like it did in the OT. That was one great credit to the design of the PT, we got to see shiny, brand new ships and ornate clothing from trailer one to indicate that this was indeed a new period from what had been previously explored.

I hope JJs not dropping the ball in creating a visually distinct progression of the world seen in the OT...

I don't mind the sabre design. If dooku has that design in ep iii, he keeps his hands.

Looks interesting, with the exception of the lightsaber (more like flamesaber) and the fact that some designs remain the same even after 30+ years. Was hoping for a shot of Luke, but there's no rush. :)

Wonder how many will still argue/care about the useless "CG vs pratical" debate...

My guess is that the black-garbed lightsabre-user is wearing armour and carrying artifacts that may be hundreds if not thousands of years old and so his appearance is a mash-up of generations of Sith Lords and likely to change over time as new acquisitions catch his eye.

The flame saber might confirm Driver’s character’s association with Sith artifacts. Or maybe, bad guy is a reanimated dark-sider from the past or some type of amalgamated Franken-Sith created by somebody.

I agree that the narrative is all Serkis. His character is rumored to be some type of alien Force-aficionado, right?

A teaser in the truest sense of the word. :chewbacca:

The voiceover sounds like Cumberbatch on first impression.

The imagery i thought, was a good mix of both Trilogies. OT with
Prequel cinematography.

The Inquisitors Flame sabre looks suitably antique and pre-
prequel.

The Troopers guns in the shot are of a new style. More white
metal in the mix. The snippet of the Troopers would suggest
a touch of 'Saving Private Ryan' camera work to be at play.

The ball droid looks illogical but entertaining and the Shot of the
Falcon, i thought was well timed.

Only a year to go.

Goosebumps. In theatres, this was incredible to behold.

Pros:
- The tone-setting first shot of Boyega looking panicked.
- Cinematography looks gorgeous
- Ball droid looks cute and fun and its personality felt very Star Wars to me
- Music was bang on perfect and boner-inducing
- The shot of the Falcon and TIES was incredibly hi-def and exciting
- Diversity of locations

Cons:
- I don't like the title card. I think there needs to be SOMETHING to indicate that this is a continuation from ROTJ. Without placing an "Episode VII" I think general audiences will be confused as to how this fits into the saga, especially with the announced spin offs

- While everything LOOKS great, it doesn't have that "fairy tale" aesthetic: it looks photo real (almost like this could all be on Earth), which is good from an effects standpoint but it doesn't strike the same mythic chords that the best of SW has done with its VFX

- Too many camera tricks and variation (i.e. the war-movie like feel of the drop ship) feels a bit un-Star Wars

- No connection to Episodes I-VI still makes the ST feel totally unnecessary narratively.

Had to wait to get off work to watch this in a decent rez but it was a nice little teaser. I don't know if it's the color grading or cinematography but something about the overall look of the shots seemed off and not entirely Star Warsy. I think CoGro's bullet about the fairy tale aspect is spot on. Or it could just be JJ's style applied to SW that will take some getting used to.

I dig the flamesaber. I do agree the flame guard may be a bit over the top but I bet that was part of the thinking behind the design process like what else could they do with a lightsaber after Maul's doubleblade, Mace's purple saber, curved hilts and the black/dark saber from CW. If you pause the scene before the blade guard ignites I think it looks pretty cool without it, like a big broad sword handle but with a lightsaber blade.

Image

Also do we know who that guy is? Is it the cyborg dude?

New troopers look good and I'm glad some practical suits are back in use instead of them all being 100% CG.

Can't wait to see more!

I agree CoGro...simply putting the Falcon in there doesn't mean its connected. Hey, we saw falcons in EpII. They should have had Chewie, Leia, Han and Luke in this in very short character bursts like TPM.

Yes, but that's expected and probably appropriate. Since the movie belongs to Abrams (and not Lucas), it's going to look and feel like any other Abrams film.

Whatever, conversions that were put in place by Lucas with the OT will probably wane away in time. Several years from now, contemporary Star Wars films may seem as far removed from the OT as golden age comic books are to today's incarnations.

I think part of idea that the "feeling" is a bit off comes from the lack of outer space scenes. Xwings and MF just above the planets surface engaging in battle is something rarely seen in SW. That and no R2? Blasphemy!

So far I have this:

Han Solo and Leia Organa are the parents of Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver. Leia is a catalyst for the events which drive Old Luke and Adam Driver into exile at the Skellig Michael and Icelandic shooting locations. As a result, Daisy Ridley is relocated to the Abu Dhabi desert shooting environment.

Daisy Ridley meets John Boyega at the TIE-Fighter crash site. The duo enlist the aid of Max Von Sydow to help locate Han Solo and Chewbacca.

Old Solo and Chewbacca with Ridley and Boyega - journey to the Skellig Michael location to confront Old Luke and Adam Driver. Stormtroopers are dispatched for welcoming party. A firefight occurs featuring Han Solo and Chewbacca versus the Seven Troopers.

Meanwhile Daisy Ridley and John Boyega enter the castle only to find a Luke who has become more like his father Vader.

Disney paid $4 billion for Lucasfilm. With a prominent character who is dead, therefore can only be used to sell products, Luke as successor is one answer. Who else would have access to Vader's remains? If an event involving an elected Leia pushes Luke and her son over the edge, then there is the motive.

I'm fucking stunned!

The little we've seen so far, looks absolutely fantastic.
I sincerely hope we don't get any more trailers. I'd rather not see any more than what we've been shown.
First viewing should knock yer block off and not be "Ah, I recognize that bit from the trailer" when we're sitting down to watch it in December 2015.
As with most movies these days, there's this tendency to release multiple trailers for a film. What's the point?

I wonder then if Boyega is a Calrissian, being they are the only black people in that Galaxy. Either that and he was on a mission that uncovered something bad or he is a storm trooper who escapes conscription

Just like old times, eh?

- I thought I had been duped/was watching a parody when the guy jumped up at the beginning

- the ball droid looks too much like a soccer ball, but I liked it

- the girl on the speeder looked like McQuarrie art...approved

- Stormtroopers in the dropship (?) looked like Star Wars meets Aliens or Starship Troopers...cool

- X-Wings shot looked straight out of the Rogue Squadron video games...holy shit!

- the guy in a dark forest wielding a lightsaber is what I would have put in a Star Wars film, as CoGro can attest to

- the final shot of the Falcon, while too obviously CGI, is exactly what we all did as kids with our Kenner Millennium Falcons

- I hated that they cranked the bass on the whole thing and distorted Williams' music, like it wasn't Hans Zimmer-sounding enough for the execs

I've watched a good 25 times now. Revised thoughts:

- I love the opening shot and the jolt of Boyega / John Williams. That shot looks like it could have been filmed in any era.

- This is new John Williams music and it works brilliantly. Star Wars works best when the sounds and music fit one-to-one with the action on screen and this was a home run in terms of trailer editing.

- The way the film is being shot combined with the production design gives me that lived-in universe vibe.

- People are saying the Falcon looks "too CG" but I think the complete opposite. It's an almost perfect-looking shot and reminded me a bit of this sequence from Star Trek in terms of the camera movement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTlIwB3fnVw

I've come around to believing that this style could be very fitting for Star Wars and will probably freshen up the action. Not to mention there's a few similar types of shots from ANH SE Death Star battle

- That X-wing shot could be one of the memorable moments in the saga assuming the sequence is a great one. I think Episode VII is going to show us a lot of stuff we never got to see in the OT because of technical limitations (i.e. space ship to surface combat).

- I still don't like the title card. I just think they need a better "logo" for the film

- The stormtrooper sequence, while it bothered me initially for giving off a bit of a "modern war movie" drop ship vibe (ET's Starship Troopers comparison is a good one), probably isn't going to be cut that way in the final film. I do really like the idea of what's happening there.

- Lots of controversy about this new saber, but the only thing that I'm really concerned about is the blade itself. There's far too much going on there and I hope this isn't the new lightsaber VFX but rather the makeup of a unique blade (flamesaber?)

Now I just need to be convinced the sequels connect to I-VI and I'll be totally on board.

yes, I really think he is attached to the new government somehow. spy, or whatever. Not necessarily a storm trooper but using the get up to get away. that is purely conjecture however with nothing to base it on and that kind of stuff has no place on the internet

same here, watched it over and over. Once i got home watched it on big screen with home theater blaring I was far more impressed. All day I was watching on computer screen with crap speakers. It certainly hasnt created any new worries and really has eased some I previously had.

I think most agree with this that its Serkis narrating.

That sword has got to be a new unique weapon. It doesn't use any of the traditional ignition sounds which are actually featured at the end of the trailer, so you know the real ones have to be in. It's grown on me. I want to see that fucker extending those extra blades slowly toward someone's neck while their swords are locked.

I swear these guys have to be fans of the Rogue Squadron games. Those aerial spy shots with the ships and pilots looked like Rendezvous on Barkhesh or something from those games. The X-Wings skimming the water is just like Vengeance on Kothlis.

Fuck, I hope this movie's great.

The current thought is that the saber is a poor man's version of a lightsaber, built without the aid of a master (note the crackling blade and lack of crisp lines). The cross guard, is not really a guard, but the exhaust from the blade.

I've tried to avoid most of the plot spoilers but have read a few opening parts, so apologies if this has been answered already, but I have a question...presuming that the opening shot of the trailer of Boyega is at the "Tie crash site", and presuming that he was piloting the Tie Fighter...why is he in Stormtrooper armour and not a Tie Pilots outfit?

Once again, apologies if this seems in any way a dumb question.

While Obi-Wan's death was needed for the rest of the trilogy, the attachment to him as a fan wasn't that strong as he'd just been introduced to us in A New Hope...Vader's death at the end of Jedi wasn't that sad as he had redeemed himself and you had a sense of pride in him doing that...

I just feel that killing off a main classic character in these new movies would be a massive downer for the storyline. Just thought id share this as some random thoughts and to see what other fans thought about it.

It would be a downer, but it may be necessary to set-up the next two films. If someone who is close to Han is in some way responsible for his demise, should his murder be avenged or can the guilty party or parties be "saved" like Anakin?

Sensory overload! Han & Chewie in the same scene...I recon Han will come back in the shower & it'll all be a bad dream!!!

Personally I don't think Abrams wouldn't risk killing off Han or a main character as he will be relying on hugley positive reviews for the movie & I think there would be hell to pay if something like that happened.

Its really hard to enjoy the SW community. People are bitch bitch and complain.

There will never be another OT. It was what it was and the prequels were are shit as they were. Sure enough, JJ is not going to let us down. I think the teaser looks amazing with the perfect blend of OT vibes and something new. In the end, thats what i want. I dont want the same shit over and over again.

New sabers, so what? The old look has been done many times, its good to see them trying something new. It looks dark and evil and on point.

Someone said "the opening looks fan made". I mean, sure enough i did not smoke anything prior watching this. Musta watched a different teaser.

Glad JJ doesn't really show anything. Its a year away, would you really like to see the meat of the story already? I dont.

My fav part about this teaser was actually the music and sound. So much low end. Its incredible. This will be the best sounding SW movie yet!

That's a shitty way of thinking. It's the way executives think, what can maintain the status quo, rather than what can serve the story.

If the rumor that Han's kid is the new villain is true and the other rumor that Luke and Han get into a fight over him and Han gets killed is also true, it would be a great set-up for the rest of the arc. It would serve the story.

John Boyega is a class act -

Thank you for all the love and support! The fan mail and fan art has added to my joy! Isn't it crazy that Star Wars is actually happening? I'm in the movie but as a star wars fan I am very excited! A year is a long time but it will be worth the wait.

To whom it may concern...
Get used to it

Niggatrooper and Basketballdroid have been taken a beating - particularly Boyega. Of course for those reasons alone the duo are now our favorites.

I wonder then if Boyega is a Calrissian, being they are the only black people in that Galaxy. Either that and he was on a mission that uncovered something bad or he is a storm trooper who escapes conscription

Well from the Mizzlewump 4chan March 2014 post - a Calrissian was supposed to be in the second Kasdan-Abrams draft:

>Leia is made leader of the Republic after her predecessor's death
>Han is a retired veteran of the Republic fleet
>Luke hasn't been seen in nearly 30 years

>the lead character is Han and Leia's daughter
>the other lead is the child of Lando, and either a male or female depending on who is cast
>the other lead is a Stormtrooper, also either a male or female depending on who is cast

>dialogue for these two characters is very rough in the second draft

>Luke has no known offspring

>The Empire still exists in the form of a number of loyal galaxies and are in a state of cold war with the Republic
>The Empire is simply referred to as the "Empire," and the Republic is referred to formally only once, as the "Galactic Republic;" no "New" anywhere

>There are no Jedi whatsoever, and people still speak as if they are extinct, with Luke being "the last of his kind"

>The main antagonists are an older student of the Emperor, and his apprentice
>The apprentice takes control of the power dynamic between the two pretty quickly...

>The Republic are excavating ruins on a neutral world for a weapon; the world factors into tense negotiations the Empire have had with the Republic, and is referred to as the "Sith Homeworld"

>Loredump: In the script, the Sith are a couple thousand years old, founded by an ancestor of Palpatine called Ruin; the apprentice in this film also goes by that name
>the ruins within the Sith Homeworld are a control station; the planet itself is the weapon

>Luke saves the day at the end, but in a bad way; he has changed.

Yo, First time posting here, been reading here off and on for a few year though,

Anyway , anyone remember many months back some spy pics appearing showing what was claimed to be the new EPVII villain?

Well the trailer seems to confirm this….

Thought it was worth a mention.
